Advanced Personal Training in Chico CA

"I routinely train ages 7 to 70 years old, special needs clients, male or female, and I successfully help to rehabilitate people recovering from injury and surgeries.  I’ve helped, including but not limited to, back, shoulder, frozen joints, and neck injuries – as well as knee, hip, and abdominal surgery recovery."

Learn More About Strength Training

Strength training is also known as resistance training and it is a vital component of overall health. The basic principles of strength training involve contracting the muscles under heavy resistance and returning to the start position for several repetitions until failure. This process creates microscopic tears in the muscle fibers. As the body repairs itself, it fills these gaps between the tears with new muscle tissue resulting in increased muscle mass and strength.

Although most think of weight lifting when they think of strength training, this is not the only way to build muscle mass and improve strength, you can also use your own body mass, resistance bands and cable machines to name a few. Not only does strength training increase muscle mass but it also increases endurance and flexibility.

See the Strength Training Definition

Strength training not only increases muscle mass and tone, but it may enhance your quality of life and improve your ability to do everyday activities.

  • Resistance training builds muscle which protects and supports joints. Building muscle also can contribute to better balance and may reduce your risk of falls. This can help you maintain independence as you age.
  • Increasing your muscle mass also increases your metabolism resulting in an increase in calories burned and reduced body fat. In 24 hours, one pound of muscle will burn approximately 96 extra calories in comparison to fat tissue.
  • Strength training can lead to improved blood flow, lowered “bad” cholesterol, increased “good” cholesterol and it helps the body use insulin more efficiently.
  • Bone mass generally decreases as we age leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis which significantly increases the risk of fractures. Strength training will slow bone loss and actually build stronger bones.
  • Strength training can improve your overall mental health, increase cognitive function and improve sleep quality.

It’s never too late to build muscle and strength. You can build muscle no matter your age.  A proven strength training program for building muscle after 50 is to lift two or three days per week, doing 10 sets per muscle and week, with about 8–15 reps per set.  Eat a healthy high-protein diet. A protein supplement can help you increase your protein intake if you don’t get enough from your regular meals. Other helpful supplements include creatine, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D.

Building muscle after 50 is not only important for a great-looking physique, it’s also essential if you look forward to a long life of healthy aging in a strong body.

Contrary to popular belief, age is not an obstacle to gaining muscle. Strength training is both effective and safe for older adults.

Effective Small Group Weight Training

I safely train members from 7 to 70 years old including those with special needs.  I also train for recovery or rehabilitation from injuries such as back, shoulder, frozen joints, and neck trauma.  Likewise, I aid with rehab for knees, hips, and abdominal surgery recovery.

Most importantly, we train every day people who just want to get stronger and increase their physical capacities to improve their quality of life!
